About Department
In response to the growing demand for higher education in Commerce, two PUC classes were introduced at the inception of the college with a mission to educate the students to become excellent and ethical business consultants, Chartered Accountants, entrepreneurs and business managers. Since then, the Department of Commerce has grown both diagonally and vertically to cater to the requirements of students community and academic fraternity in this backward area.
Year 1978 witnessed an important milestone to the Department when an undergraduate course has been introduced thus converting it into multi faculty one from single man Department.
Having understood the contribution made by the Department in shaping the students community and the demand for higher studies in Commerce, the then management took the most appropriate decision to upgrade it in to a Postgraduate Department forthwith. Accordingly, the necessary steps were taken. Madurai Kamaraj University appointed a Special Commission of Inspection and based on its recommendation, permission was granted to start M.Com course from the year 1983.
In 2005, the Department has been elevated to a Research Centre, another significant step forward by introducing M.Phil., and Ph.D., programs in Commerce. This addition underscored the Department's commitment to nurturing scholarly research and providing students with opportunities for deeper exploration into specialised areas of Commerce. The M.Phil., and Ph.D., programs have been instrumental in advancing research and fostering a new generation of scholars.
In the year 2012 the Department has been shifted to a new and exclusive building with the ample infrastructure and with a dedicated Computer laboratory. Focusing on research and innovation the Department so far produced 69 Ph.Ds and 116 M.Phils on various branches of Commerce.
Every year the Department organises Workshops, Seminars and Symposium for the benefit of students. Apart from this, our faculty members acted as resource persons in seminars and academic conferences organized by the University and various other Colleges. The Department is conducting Tally ERP Programme and a few add on courses every year for the benefit of students.
Dr. S. Mariajohn did a Minor Project sponsored by ICSSR in 2004. Two intercollegiate workshops were organized by Dr. S. Balamurugan and Dr. A. Sujatha with the financial assistance of College management and ICSSR respectively. Besides that the department had conducted National and International level Seminars and Webinars for the benefit of academic communities.
To envision the Department of Commerce as a Research Centre of Excellence in Commerce and to create professionals with ethical values, our faculties encourage and guide students to pursue various professional courses in Commerce and inculcate the entrepreneurial traits in the minds of students.
Commerce Department with its own excellence organized a seminar on behalf of Commerce Association “Mega Tria Munnera” on 9th of February 2018. Our honorable College President Thiru. S.V. Subramanian headed the session and delivered an excellent speech on Trade and Commerce in Cardamom.

The Department of Commerce has recorded consistent improvement in its academic, research and placement performance. It offers a range of innovatively designed programs whose curricula are constantly updated to meet the changing requirement of the industry and to meet the needs of major stakeholders. We believe that our students have been well accepted in their job profiles and have consistently exceeded expectations of the corporate world. During study at the department, the students are encouraged to get hands-on experience in the corporate world through internship projects with reputed organizations. These internship projects enable them to understand the relevance of working in a group and also help them to realize the finer aspects and importance of teamwork. We also encourage students to organize events at other colleges, and also get involved in activities of social relevance. With all these inputs one finds our students hardworking, practical-oriented and effective in any work environment. The curriculum is taught by a distinguished faculty combining academic excellence and real-world experience with dedication and commitment. With this brief introduction, I welcome you to be a part of our journey towards being a Department of excellence in education, training, and research.❞
