About Department
The Department of Chemistry was started in the year 1976. B.Sc. Chemistry was started in the year 1979. Now the Department has been upgraded to Postgraduate Department from 2010. Now the Department has been upgraded Research department from 2013 onwards. We are offering M. Phil., and Ph.D., programmes. The department also offered M.Sc., Industrial Chemistry under U.G.C sponsored innovative programme from 2012 with funding of 24 lakhs. Our Department also offered UGC funded Certificate Course in Industrial Chemistry, Environmental chemical analysis, Chemo-informatics And Medical Laboratory technology with total funding of 40 lakhs in the year of 2012. The department offers U.G.C. sponsored Community College Courses Diploma in Industrial Chemistry and Diploma in Food Processing from 2018 onwards. Our department is a DST sponsored FIST department. The department so far produced 25 M.Phil., and 9 Ph.D., Scholars. Department of Chemistry has produced more than 1500 students for past 50 years.
In the year 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2014 we conducted EMERGING TRENDS IN CHEMISTRY ETC-1, ETC-2, ETC-3, ETC–4 and ETC -5 funded by UGC, CSIR, DRDO and TNSCST. We also conducted the Internship Science Camp funded by DST, New Delhi, for motivating the school students viz, INSPIRE-I, INSPIRE-II, INSPIRE-III. We have conducted Young Student Scientist Programme YSSP-I, YSSP-II Science Awareness Programme and Science exhibition funded by TNSCST, TamilNadu. The Department of Chemistry has been involved in developing various research programmes in different areas sponsored by national level funding agencies like UGC, CSIR, DRDO, etc. Our Department has operated four minor and two major research projects funded by UGC and DRDO. DRDO has sanctioned a grant of Rs.14.99 lakhs to Dr. M. Rajarajan for pursuing the project in the field of Nanochemistry. UGC has also sanctioned a grant of Rs.7.23 lakhs to Dr. M. Rajarajan for pursuing the project in the field of Nanobiomedical applications. Dr. M. Rajarajan has made four international visits funded by DST, UGC and CSIR, two at school of Chemistry, University of Melbourne, Australia and one at Sorbone university, Paris, France and Rice University , USA. UGC has sanctioned a grant of Rs.1.7 lakhs to Dr. B. Kavitha for handle the project in the field of surface modified metal oxide nanocomposites for environmental remediation. The faculty of our Department has published more than 150 research papers in reputed peer – reviewed international journals and presented more than 200 research papers in national and international conferences. The faculty members of department of chemistry authored two books.
From 2022 onwards M.Sc., Chemistry students receiving Student research Projects from TNSCST for their academic projects every year. Students of our Department undergoing skill development programme conducted in CECRI, Karaikudi every year.
The Department of Chemistry focussed the research area of Nanophotocatalysis, Electrochemical Bio-sensors, Adsorption, Mathematical Modelling, Synthetic organic chemistry etc. Our Department also under takes collaborated research work with State level Colleges, Universities, and National and International universities. Our Department is having sophisticated instrument facilities viz UV-Visible spectrophotometer, CH Electrochemical Analyser, Fourier Transform-Infra Red Spectrophotometer, Spectrofluorometer and UV-Visible-DRS Spectrophotometer.
